Singapore, 22 April 2025
Singapore has significantly advanced its immigration processes by expanding the Automated Clearance Initiative (ACI) to accommodate all passport holders, regardless of nationality. This move allows both first-time and returning visitors to utilize automated lanes at air, land, and sea checkpoints for both arrival and departure, streamlining the entry and exit experience.
Seamless Entry with Biometric Technology
Under the ACI, eligible travelers can bypass traditional manual counters by using automated lanes equipped with multi-modal biometric scanning technology. Upon arrival, travelers' facial, iris, and fingerprint biometrics are captured and enrolled automatically, eliminating the need for prior registration. An Electronic Visit Pass (e-Pass) is then emailed to the traveler, detailing their visit pass validity and last day of stay. This system not only expedites the immigration process but also enhances security and efficiency at checkpoints.
Passport-Free Clearance Initiatives
In a groundbreaking development, Singapore has introduced passport-free clearance options at various checkpoints. At Changi Airport, Singapore residents and long-term pass holders can now clear immigration using facial and iris biometrics without presenting a physical passport. Similarly, at land checkpoints like Woodlands and Tuas, travelers can utilize QR code clearance, further simplifying the immigration process.
Expanding Infrastructure to Meet Growing Demand
To accommodate the increasing volume of travelers, Singapore has been progressively installing more automated lanes across its checkpoints. By 2026, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) aims to have approximately 800 automated lanes operational, significantly boosting clearance throughput and reducing wait times.
Preparing for Your Trip
Travelers planning to visit Singapore should ensure they submit the SG Arrival Card with Electronic Health Declaration within three days prior to arrival. This submission is crucial for a smooth entry process and is a prerequisite for utilizing the automated clearance lanes.
